Registered dietician Joanna Wilson gives us the lowdown on why oats are so awesome…
1. They’re good for your heart
In 1997, after reviewing 33 clinical studies performed over the previous decades, the FDA approved of a claim that taking in at least 3g of beta-glucan from oats per day reduced the risk of heart disease.

2. They help you lower your cholesterol levels
Beta-glucan has also been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol, which in turn reduces blood pressure.
3. You will literally feel fuller
For real. Why? Beta-glucan forms a viscous gel in the stomach that delays digestion, which results in less glucose being absorbed, moderating the blood-glucose levels post eating. Aka low-GI.
Bet you didn’t know this: Cook, cool and re-heat your oats. This increases the amount of resistant starch in your porridge. Resistant starch escapes digestion in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby lowering the GI (even further)!
4. Vegans can get their protein on!
Compared to other grains, oats are much higher in protein! Boost your intake further by adding some almonds to your breakfast bowl. Vegans rejoice!
5. They’re packed with fibre
Oats and oat bran are a rich source of dietary fibre, containing 10 to 15g total fibre per 100g serving. And really, that’s all we’re missing in our lives!
