Keen to take up trail running but not sure where to start? These are renowned South African trail and mountain runner Meg Mackenzie’s best trails for beginner trail runners…

In Cape Town

“The loop of the base of Lion’s Head is perfect. It’s 5km with some beautiful flowing trails and some good ups and downs to try.”

In Durban

“Holla Trails is a good place to start. There are loads of marked routes with different colours according to length and difficulty.”

In Joburg

“Klipriviersberg is beautiful. There are marked and coloured routes there too. Keep your eyes open for wildebeest, zebra and mongooses!”

In the Garden Route

“Robberg Nature Reserve has a 5km or 8km option. Both are stunningly beautiful with the ocean beside you and sand dunes, views and wildlife.”

More about Meg Mackenzie

She’s adventurous. Throughout high school, Meg did cross-country, paddling, horse riding and adventure racing. She always loved running and was naturally competitive, but also loved mountains, hiking and adventure. Trail running allowed her to combine these aspects into one exciting sport.

She’s about the van life. “Last year, I gave up my teaching job, bought a van and travelled Europe following the Golden Trail Series. I raced five races in the Alps and Scotland and managed to rank in the top 10 overall, which meant qualification to compete in the final which was on home soil – the Otter African Trail Run last October. I won Otter the year before, so going back as defending champ and lining up with nine of the best athletes in the world was really exciting!” says Meg. She finished eighth overall for the Series last year, and placed sixth at the Otter Trail – an incredible achievement.
