Red light on face of young model to represent a story about how to manage rosacea

Is your skin overreacting to everything from fragrance to food? You probably blush easily and sport a solid
beetroot face after exercise too. “The most common cause is a genetic predisposition to rosacea, which affects a large number of people, especially those with lighter skin types,” says dermatologist Dr Shobhan Manoharan.

Add environmental factors like stress, alcohol and extreme hot or cold and your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin can range from pinkish to angry red. Here’s a plan to follow that might get you looking less flushed…

Step 1

Start by using a mild, soap-free cleanser to keep the peace i.e not aggravate any flare up, like Skin Creamery Oil-Milk Cleanser. An ultra-gentle yet highly effective cleanser, it wipes away dirt, grime and make-up without stripping the skin of its precious natural oils. It’s soap-free and alcohol-free, so you can use it daily without causing dryness, tightness or premature ageing.

Step 2

Recruit a redness-reducing spritz,
says Emma Hobson, education manager at the International Dermal Institute. Try Vichy Thermal Water, a fine, refreshing mist, suitable for use on sensitive skin. Rich in rare minerals that soothe and refresh irritated, dry skin, it reduces itch and redness with anti-inflammatory calendula.

Step 3

Lightly exfoliate (read: do not rub
or manually exfoliate). “Products with beta hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid, in low concentrations, are useful to reduce the inflammation associated with rosacea,” says Manoharan. Look for a gentle exfoliator containing salicylic acid, and keep it to once or twice a week. Try SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator – an oil-free, resurfacing and replenishing serum, which provides both exfoliation and hydration.

Step 4

Use a weightless calming cream to quench the skin. Try Dermalogica Calm Water Gel – a refreshing gel formula that transforms into a skin-quenching fluid upon application, forming a weightless barrier against environmental assault. Dual hyaluronic acid tech works in different skin surface layers to increase and lock in moisture. Love.
