Be prepared
Always take something warm, something to eat, sunscreen and something to drink. If you find yourself in a tricky situation (unsure of where you are or with a sprained ankle), it’s a good idea to have all the necessary things to keep you comfy and thinking straight.

Get a buddy
You always need to be aware of your surroundings. Try to find a friend or a group to run with. As a bonus, you’ll have someone else to push you during the tough inclines.

Get trail shoes
They have a specialised outsole grip to prevent slipping. Salomon and inov-8 specialise in trail shoes. ASICS, Altra, Reebok and adidas also have good options.

Stay calm…
Even if you see a snake – they move away really quickly. Bites are very rare, but if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten, take note of the snake’s markings (to identify it) and visit a hospital for an antivenom injection.
