Homemade, Healthy ,Vegan, Gluten-free Pizza Recipe

A vegan, gluten-free pizza, you say? The critics may argue that if there’s no cheese, how can it be called a pizza? I’ll tell you how: creamy, delicious avo makes up for the lack of cheese! And if you really want to, you can add a sprinkle of nutritional yeast for that extra umami flavour reminiscent of Parmesan. (Or call it a very fancy focaccia pizza?)

You can find vegan, gluten-free pizza bases in some health stores, but it’s not always easy. For example, Woolworths sells gluten-free pizza bases. But they are not vegan, because they include small amounts of dairy.

So, if you want to make your own vegan, gluten-free pizza base from scratch, use the recipe below to make two small pizzas. And then you can claim it’s healthy too!

For the vegan, gluten-free pizza toppings

Meanwhile, once the pizza bases are in the oven, begin to prepare your toppings! The top four of these toppings are great to add onto the pizza bases while they still have some time left in the oven. But the last four are best served fresh on top afterwards! (Did you know avo can go bitter when it cooks?)

In the oven:

  • Kalamata olives, pitted, halved
  • Baby rosa tomatoes, halved
  • Asparagus, sliced lengthways
  • 2 chillies, finely sliced

To serve:

  • Rocket leaves
  • Pickled/preserved artichokes, chopped
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Balsamic vinegar (optional)
  • Nutritional yeast (optional)
